Trending Now: Granny Hair

Beauty is usually seen as being youthful & this means erasing any sign of aging. From anti-aging creams to serums, the list goes on & on for products meant to reverse the signs of aging. In the past, women have avoided grey hair.  Hair color solutions have developed formulas specifically designed in targeting grey hair. Women go to the salon to touch up their roots & hide their grey hair.

But now grey hair is taking over 2015 & we're calling it the "Granny Hair". & it's not just for old ladies! Granny hair is becoming popular amongst young women. & it includes all types of grey.

"Granny hair is basically silver hair, any tone of grey in your hair: steel grey, silvery grey, really, really white, platinum-ish with either violet or silver undertones," New York hair stylist Jan-Marie Arteca said. "That's the trend."

Who knew there could be more to 50 shades of grey?

Grey is good right? No more spending money going on to the salon to cover those grey strands? Think again.

Grey colored hair is actually a difficult color to achieve. Since grey is not a natural hair color, it's referred to as a fantasy color. Fantasy colors are only temporary & fade out of your hair quickly. A common problem many women run into as well is the grey having a green tint to it. So make sure to always consult with your hair stylist to know that they can do the job you want.

Because grey/silver is such a light color it can only be applied on very light hair. This means bleach. & your hair stylist can only lighten your hair to an extent without damaging your hair as much. If you have dark hair, your hair will need more than one salon session to be light enough for grey to be applied on. I have naturally black Asian hair & the bottom of part of my ombre had to reach almost platinum blonde for silver to show in my hair.

Grey is a cool color so when your hair stylist is done washing out the toner from your hair, you may notice that the shade is darker than you expected. Don't worry, your hair will lighten the more you wash it. Overtime the grey will fade into a cool blonde. If you can afford it, go to your salon to bring back the grey in your hair. Grey fades pretty quickly so this may mean coming into the salon close to every month. Touching up the grey in your hair is just your hair stylist toning it. Adding toner is really simple & my hair stylist suggested to just wash my hair with a silver color rinse instead to get my grey back.

A color rinse is basically a color solution applied throughout washed towel dried hair. It's different than box color hair solutions in that you don't have to mix any solution, lotion, or conditioner. Everything is already set in the bottle. Also it's not permanent. Roux Fanci-Full has a temporary hair color rinse in #42 Silver Lining that is great for adding your grey/silver back in! You can order a 15oz bottle at Sally Beauty for just $7.

Purple shampoo is also used often to tone grey hair & prevent brassiness. Be aware though that the purple can stain your grey hair temporarily.

This is a high maintenance color. Because you have to keep up with grey often, chemicals are being used on your hair frequently. I recommend only color rinsing your hair or going to the salon to add the grey back on special occasions. I'm really loving the grey in my hair & what's great is that if I'm ever tired of it, it just fades to blonde. So no harm in trying out this trend. Look at how fabulous it's becoming.
